Aquatic Therapy

Whether you are preparing for surgery or maintaining post-surgery success, the aquatic therapy pool in the Sargeant Family Center for Aquatic Therapy & Rehab will help patients to feel their best while maximizing their physical potential.

The center, which features the HydroWorx 2000 pool, provides enjoyable, low-impact exercise for individuals seeking to strengthen their muscle or to expand their cardiovascular capabilities.  The therapy pool is perfect for increasing fitness before surgery because exercising in water puts less strain on joints, allowing individuals to exercise more with less pain than land-based programs.

How Can Aquatic Therapy Help?

Aquatic therapy can be ideal for those who have a difficult time exercising on land.  Treatment in water may benefit those with the following conditions:

  • Chronic pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia
  • Neck, shoulder, lower back, knee or ankle injuries
  • Pre-surgical conditioning
  • Weight loss
  • Joint replacement
  • Parkinson's disease, neuromuscular conditions
  • Problems with balance, strength or flexibility

Why It Works

In water, the effects of gravity are greatly reduced and functional activity and motion can occur.  The properties of water allow exercise in a relative or "low or no impact" environment for more comfortable movement and enhanced range of motion.   Water supports the body, reduces joint stress and provides resistance and assistance to movement.  Patients can improve mobility, strengthen and function rapidly during the healing process.

Features of the HydroWorx 2000 include:

  • Adjustable floor and variable water depth
  • Variable water temperature
  • Computer integration
  • Support bars
  • Large treatment area (8' x 12')
  • Handheld remote control
  • Variable speed underwater treadmill
  • Resistance jets
