Exploring Palliative vs. Hospice Care Options

Posted on November 03, 2023 in In The News

November is annually recognized as Hospice and Palliative Care Month. While pain and symptom relief are target objectives for both hospice and palliative care, there are key differences when it comes to the prognosis and goals for each care mode. Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice – Greater Youngstown and Ohio Living Palliative Medicine can help you prepare for serious illness or advanced care, wherever you call home. Here is a helpful comparison to consider:

Palliative Medicine

Palliative medicine can be provided at any stage, including during curative or aggressive treatments. It is recommended for individuals with an average life expectancy of one-two years if their current condition progresses as expected. With Ohio Living Palliative Medicine, care is extended by a team of experienced physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers and other specialists who work together to help provide relief from pain, shortness of breath, nausea, anxiety and/or depression. Qualified costs are covered through insurance or paid by the insured individual.

Hospice Care

Hospice is comfort care without curative intent, either because a patient no longer has curative options or has chosen not to pursue treatment because the side effects outweigh the benefits. It is recommended for individuals who receive a prognosis of six months or less. Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice – Greater Youngstown extends personalized 24/7 hospice care via a team of compassionate professionals who specialize in symptom control, pain management, counseling, education, spiritual care and bereavement. If Medicare eligibility requirements are met, more than 90 percent of hospice care is paid for through the Medicare hospice benefit.

As a faith-based, non-profit organization that has operated more than 100 years with excellence, Ohio Living aims to provide adults with caring and quality services toward the enhancement of physical, mental and spiritual well-being consistent with the Christian Gospel. This includes investing back into the communities we serve, and in Northeast Ohio, one way this is accomplished is through an annual Home Health and Hospice Conference. This free two-day event, next hosted Nov. 8 and 9, 2023, is offered to medical professionals, caregivers and others, and includes breakout sessions, speakers and relevant presentations centered in the field of hospice care.
